Among remains firm in her commitment to making Parliament accessible to all regions of the country

Speaker of Parliament, Anita Among, has pledged to persist with holding regional parliamentary sittings despite facing public criticism and a boycott from some Opposition MPs. Among made her stance clear during a visit to the home of the late Speaker Jacob Oulanyah in Omoro district, where she addressed journalists.

Defending the decision to hold sittings outside of Kampala, Among emphasized that Parliament has the authority to convene anywhere in Uganda, even "in the middle of the road" if necessary. She highlighted the benefits of regional sittings, particularly for areas like Gulu, where the latest session is scheduled to take place.

"There are MPs who don't even know the road to Gulu, but now with Parliament sitting there, you find all the hotels are full, and the local economy is benefiting. It's important to take Parliament to the people, as we are elected by them. It's not always about people coming to Parliament; sometimes Parliament must go to them," Among stated.

Her comments come amid a boycott by some Opposition MPs who argue that the regional sittings impose an unnecessary financial burden on taxpayers. However, Among remains firm in her commitment to making Parliament accessible to all regions of the country, asserting that such sittings are both necessary and beneficial for local communities.
