Kapchorwa - President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, accompanied by First Lady and Minister of Education and Sports, Maama Janet Museveni, has officially commissioned the National High Altitude Training Centre in Teryet, Kapchorwa. The state-of-the-art facility is expected to bolster Uganda’s standing in international athletics by providing athletes with world-class training opportunities.

Speaking at the event, President Museveni highlighted the government’s phased approach to development, noting that initial efforts were focused on foundational priorities such as peace, immunization, and wealth creation. “The NRM does its work organically; we don't rush into things. Our focus on basics has seen Sebei's population grow from 20,000 in the 1960s to over half a million today due to peace and immunization,” he said.

Museveni acknowledged that while the government had not previously prioritized direct investments in sports, its emphasis on essential services such as roads, electricity, and maintaining a peaceful environment had indirectly supported the industry.
“We haven’t accomplished much in sports yet because our initial focus was on essential services. However, the peaceful environment we’ve created has greatly benefited sports,” he remarked.

Commitment to athletes
The President reaffirmed the government’s dedication to supporting athletes in their pursuit of excellence. “We are committed to supporting our dedicated athletes in achieving success. Our hard work and commitment will continue to drive progress in the sports industry,” he stated.
First Lady Janet Museveni also underscored the importance of the training center, describing it as a significant milestone for Uganda’s sports sector. She commended the athletes from the Sebei region and across the country who have brought international acclaim to Uganda.

A boost for Uganda's athletics
The National High Altitude Training Centre, located at an elevation conducive to high-performance training, will serve as a key resource for both national and international athletes. The facility is expected to produce more champions from Uganda, following in the footsteps of celebrated long-distance runners like Joshua Cheptegei and Peruth Chemutai.

With the inauguration of this center, Uganda takes a significant step toward elevating its presence in the global sports arena while ensuring long-term development for its athletes.
