SHEEMA - Police in Sheema District are investigating a case of murder and aggravated robbery after the brutal killing of a retired teacher, Nyehangane Godfrey Tabandama, 72, at his home in Nyamiyaga Cell, Kakunyu Ward, Kabwohe Division. The incident occurred during the night of September 18-19, 2024, when unknown assailants attacked the elderly man and robbed his property.
According to a police report, the crime was first reported by Mr. Tashobya Daniel, a neighbor of the deceased, who informed authorities that Tabandama had been murdered. The Sheema District Police Commander (DPC), ASP Kasule Consilata, along with a homicide team and a scene-of-crime officer (SOCO), quickly arrived at the scene to investigate.
Upon arrival, police discovered the body of Nyehangane lying face down inside his home. His legs had been tied with banana fibers, and blood was found oozing from his mouth and nose. The victim had no visible physical injuries, but it is suspected that he may have been strangled. The assailants are believed to have stolen unspecified property, including a TV screen.
A canine unit was introduced at the crime scene, which led investigators to the workers' quarters on the premises. The dog specifically singled out and grabbed 22-year-old Victor Magezi, a herdsman employed by the deceased. Magezi, along with two other suspects, Kato Stephen, 17, a student, and Turyasingura Stuart, 20, also a herdsman, have since been arrested in connection with the murder.
The body of Nyehangane has been taken to Kabwohe Health Centre IV for a postmortem examination. Meanwhile, police have opened a case file under Sheema CRB 590/2024 and are continuing investigations to trace any additional suspects and recover the stolen property.
The murder of the retired teacher has shocked the local community, who are demanding justice. Police have urged anyone with further information to come forward to assist in the ongoing investigation.
