Makindye – A senior police officer attached to the Wamala Region has been remanded to prison on charges of theft. Superintendent of Police (SP) Begira Avido, a Human Resources Officer, was arraigned before the Makindye Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday evening.

The case, brought forward by the State House Anti-Corruption Unit in collaboration with the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) and the Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID), alleges that SP Begira stole building materials worth approximately UGX 17 million from a civilian.
According to prosecution, on February 10, 2023, at Kanaaba Zone in Makindye Ssabagabo, Wakiso District, the accused unlawfully took iron sheets, poles, and bags of cement belonging to one Kato Bumali.

It is further alleged that SP Begira ignored multiple summonses from his superiors to respond to the accusations, prompting his eventual arrest and arraignment.
He was remanded until June 19, 2025, pending further mention of the case.

The case adds to growing concerns over accountability and conduct within the law enforcement community, especially when officers entrusted with public service are accused of breaching the very laws they are meant to uphold. Authorities say investigations are ongoing.
