Parliament is today expected to receive the body of the late Gen. (Rtd) Moses Ali, Uganda's Second Deputy Prime Minister and Member of Parliament for Adjumani West, as the country begins official ceremonies to honour one of its longest-serving political and military figures.
Gen. Moses Ali died on Saturday, July 18, at Nakasero Hospital in Kampala at the age of 87, after decades of public service that spanned successive governments, military leadership, and national politics.
President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni announced the veteran leader's death, describing him as a patriotic Ugandan whose contribution to the country would be remembered for generations.
"It is with deep sorrow that I announce the death of our brother Gen. Moses Ali. He died today at Nakasero Hospital, at 1600 hours. Gen. Moses Ali has provided service to his country for a long time, as a soldier and a political leader. In the West Nile region, he provided the good example of being a big modern farmer. We shall greatly miss his contribution. May the Almighty God rest his soul in eternal peace," the President said.
The government has accorded the late general an official burial in recognition of his service to Uganda. Minister for the Presidency Milly Babirye Babalanda said the National Organising Committee is working with the family to finalize funeral arrangements, with burial expected to take place on Wednesday, July 22, in Adjumani District.
The official programme includes the body lying in state at Parliament, where Members of Parliament, government officials, diplomats, and members of the public are expected to pay their final respects before it is transported to his ancestral home.
A Career That Spanned Decades
Born on April 5, 1939, in Adjumani District, Gen. Moses Ali played a significant role in Uganda's political and military history. He served as Minister of Finance during the Idi Amin administration before later leading the Uganda National Rescue Front (UNRF). Following peace negotiations, he reconciled with the National Resistance Movement government and became one of its senior leaders.
Throughout his public career, he held several cabinet portfolios, including Tourism, Trade and Industry, Internal Affairs, Disaster Preparedness and Refugees, and served in different terms as First, Third, and Second Deputy Prime Minister.
He also represented Adjumani West in Parliament for many years and was sworn into the 12th Parliament earlier this year after retaining his seat in the 2026 general elections.
Political leaders from across the country have praised his contribution to national reconciliation, peace-building, and the socio-economic transformation of the West Nile region, with several calling for lasting memorials in his honour.
As Uganda prepares to bid farewell to the veteran statesman, Parliament's tribute is expected to highlight his decades of service in shaping the country's political and security landscape.
Gen. Moses Ali is survived by his family, who continue to receive condolences from leaders, institutions, and citizens across Uganda.
