The Anti-Corruption Court has convicted and sentenced two senior Lira District Local Government officials over their involvement in the irregular acquisition of government land.
The officials are Ocen Joseph Alwong, the Senior Land Management Officer, and Opio Francis, the District Staff Surveyor. They were convicted through a plea bargain and sentenced to four and three years in prison, respectively.
The duo were arrested and charged in 2024 by the State House Anti-Corruption Unit, in collaboration with the Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID) and the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), on charges of abuse of office and conspiracy to defraud.

Prosecution alleged that between February 2019 and October 2020, while serving in their respective official capacities, the two officials facilitated the irregular issuance of a freehold certificate of title over land belonging to Lira District.
The title was allegedly processed and issued in the name of Ocen Joseph Alwong's daughter, for Plot 19, Ben Emor Road, Ireda Estate, Lira District, with the documents falsely indicating that she was the customary owner of the land.
The Anti-Corruption Court had earlier also convicted the two officials on similar charges and sentenced them to three and four years' imprisonment, respectively.
The latest convictions add to the legal consequences faced by the officials over the alleged misuse of their positions in the management and transfer of public land.
