With footsteps of faith and hearts full of hope, the first group of pilgrims from St. Kaggwa Parish in the Archdiocese of Mbarara has embarked on their sacred journey to Namugongo, where they will join thousands in honoring the courage and sacrifice of Uganda's martyrs on June 3rd.
Today, over 30 pilgrims began their trek to the Namugongo Catholic Shrine—the revered site where Uganda’s martyrs were killed for their faith. Carrying rosaries, walking sticks, and banners proclaiming their devotion, the pilgrims set out in unity and determination.

Their journey, spanning many miles and several weeks, is both a physical challenge and a spiritual act of faith, inspired by the martyrs they seek to honor.
The group is led by Burandina Katontori, aged 75, from Kabagarame, Ruharo Ward in Bushenyi-Ishaka Municipality. A seasoned pilgrim, Burandina will guide the team with deep experience and unwavering devotion.
One of the well-known longtime trekkers, 103-year-old Benard Tibyangye, a retired Catholic catechist from Rwakashoma Sub-Parish, St. Andrea Kaggwa Bushenyi Parish, could not take part this year due to his advanced age. Speaking to Torch Media from his home, Tibyangye shared that his spirit remains with the pilgrims.
"Even though I could not trek this time, my prayers are with those walking. I continue to honor the martyrs from home," he said.
Tibyangye revealed that he has been struggling with persistent back pain, which has made it difficult for him to move.
"Given my age, I would need someone to accompany me, but there isn’t anyone available. So, I cannot force myself to make the trek to Namugongo," he explained.
Richard Bangirana, chairman of the St. Kaggwa Parish Pilgrims Committee, expressed hope that their group would be among the earliest to arrive at Namugongo. "We are proud to lead the way, and our pilgrims are eager to represent our parish in this special celebration. We kindly ask for your prayers," he said.
The pilgrimage to Namugongo—where Catholic martyrs were killed in 1886 for refusing to renounce their faith—remains one of the most important events on Uganda's Christian calendar. Each year, millions travel to the shrine to remember the martyrs' courage and sacrifice, walking long distances to pray, reflect, and renew their faith.
"We walk not just with our feet, but with our hearts open to God’s grace. This is a time to reflect, renew our faith, and remember the sacrifice of those who gave their lives for God," added Bangirana.

This year, Lugazi Diocese will lead the Martyrs’ Day celebrations at the Namugongo Catholic Shrine, bringing together Christians from across the country in prayer and remembrance.
As they continue their journey, the St. Kaggwa pilgrims will pause along the way for prayers, Mass, and fellowship—strengthening both body and spirit. Singing hymns and reciting the Rosary together, they encourage one another to stay strong and focused throughout the trek.
Fr. Evarist Mutambi, parish priest of St. Kaggwa Parish, who blessed and sent off the pilgrims, urged them to keep their intentions clear and their hearts pure. "Let this pilgrimage be a sign of your faithfulness. Walk in the footsteps of the martyrs with courage, love, and prayer," he said.
More pilgrims from St. Kaggwa Parish are expected to join the journey in the coming days. They will arrive ahead of the celebrations, joining countless others in prayer and thanksgiving—a fitting end to their journey of faith.
