CENSURE MOTION: NUP MPs and Ssekikubo regroup as court backs Mpuuga

Sekikuubo's motion was quashed by court

There is renewed buzz in Parliament following the court ruling that effectively quashed a motion led by Lwemiyaga County MP, Theodore Ssekikubo, aimed at censuring Parliamentary Commissioners over a controversial service award. MPs believe that since the court declared the sh1.7 billion service award to Parliamentary Commissioners as legal, Ssekikubo’s censure motion, submitted to Clerk of Parliament Adolf Mwesige last week, may no longer hold any weight. Despite the court’s decision, Ssekikubo and a group of MPs from the National Unity Platform (NUP) are regrouping, arguing that their motion remains valid.
“Court has not nullified our motion. It still stands because our concerns differ from those addressed in the court ruling,” Ssekikubo asserted.

Earlier this week, High Court Judge Douglas Karekona Singiza ruled that the sh1.7 billion service award given to backbench commissioners Mathias Mpuuga (Nyendo-Mukungwe Division MP, NUP), Esther Afoyochan (Zombo District Woman MP, NRM), Prossy Mbabazi Akampurira (Rubanda District Woman MP, NRM), and Solomon Silwany (Bukooli Central MP, NRM), was lawfully approved by Parliament. Mpuuga welcomed the ruling, seeing it as a vindication from the criticism he faced from fellow NUP MPs who had been highly critical of him over the service award.

The issue surrounding the service award has evolved into a broader power struggle between Mpuuga and NUP party president Robert Kyagulanyi, also known as Bobi Wine.
“To those who have been undermining me, I’m curious to see what they will now say about me. Regardless, I will continue to fulfill my responsibilities and won’t waste my energy on those who have been trying to tarnish my image,” Mpuuga said.
“For the past eight months, they have focused all their energy on me, trying to damage my reputation. It’s unfortunate that some of these individuals claim to be educated. I’ll leave that to God, but I will soon inform the nation of my next steps,” he added.
