One of BFM Radio’s long-serving presenters, Carol Namara, has reportedly been barred by the management of the Bushenyi-based station from continuing her work. According to reliable sources, Ms. Namara, who has been hosting a popular Saturday morning family show, was on Friday instructed by one of the station’s bosses not to report for the program because she is contesting for an elective political position.

Ms. Namara recently declared her intention to run against Bushenyi District Woman Member of Parliament Hon. Annet Katusiime Mugisha, whose husband is among the largest shareholders of the Tank Hill-based BFM Radio station. Her removal from the airwaves is being viewed by some as an act of political witch-hunt, especially given that other colleagues in similar situations were allowed to continue broadcasting until they voluntarily resigned.

A well-known civil society activist with the Western Ankole Civil Society Forum (WACSOF) — a leading CSO network in the Ankole sub-region — Ms. Namara has a rich background in advocacy, particularly on issues of accountability and human rights. Observers believe she could be a strong contender for the Bushenyi District Woman MP seat.

Hon. Annet Katusiime Mugisha nearly lost her seat to little-known Viana Kemigisha, popularly known as Nyamunyonyi, during the recently concluded NRM primaries. Ms. Namara is expected to contest as an independent candidate against both Nyamunyonyi and Hon. Katusiime Mugisha.

Her sudden removal from BFM Radio has also quelled speculation that she was “planted” by Eng. Silver Mugisha and his wife to weaken Nyamunyonyi’s growing political influence after her strong performance in the NRM primaries.
