As the Electoral Commission (EC) concluded the nomination exercise for parliamentary candidates, several contenders in Sheema and Bushenyi districts — including political heavyweights — were nominated during the two-day process. In Sheema District, the Returning Officer, Pius Ahimbisibwe, confirmed that a total of 24 candidates were expected to be nominated during the exercise, although not all turned up.

Among those expected was Sheema North MP Naome Kibaaju, who had picked nomination forms to contest as an independent candidate against Dr. Elioda Tumwesigye, after losing to him in the NRM primaries. Kibaaju came third with over 3,000 votes but later issued a statement withdrawing from the race to pave the way for the NRM flag bearer, Dr. Tumwesigye.

Former Minister of Health Dr. Elioda Tumwesigye was nominated at 1:15 p.m. at the district headquarters in Kabwohe. After his nomination, Prof. Ephraim Kamuntu, the NRM flag bearer for Sheema South, pledged to complete the development projects he initiated during his previous term. These include the extension of electricity within the constituency, tarmacking of the Kabwohe–Kitagata–Rukungiri road, and upgrading Kitagata Hospital to regional referral status. He also promised to extend piped water to hilly areas.

Caroline Namara, another independent candidate, condemned the alleged distribution of money to voters by the incumbent, urging residents to “eat the money and vote for ideas.”
For her part, Annet Katusiime Mugisha, the incumbent Woman MP, asked the people of Bushenyi to renew her mandate, saying her track record speaks for itself. “Dear my people, my bosses, Abanya’Bushenyi (Bushenyi residents), as we look ahead, I wish to assure you that once entrusted with the next mandate, I will build upon the strong foundation we have laid together. My service record to our communities before becoming your Woman MP in 2021, and my commitment and passion to serve during this current term, will guide me to serve you even better in the next term (2026–2031),” she said.
