The Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Thomas Tayebwa, has dismissed claims by some members of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) who have questioned his loyalty to the party due to his earlier association with the opposition.
Tayebwa made the remarks during a media interview after hosting a reconciliation meeting at his home in Kampala with top leaders from Mubende District. The meeting was aimed at resolving disagreements that arose among party leaders during the recently concluded general elections.
Responding to critics, Tayebwa said he has been a member of the NRM for 15 years and questioned why some party members still view him as a newcomer. Using a metaphor drawn from marriage, he said it was unreasonable for someone who has been in the party for such a long time to still be treated as a “mugole,” a term used to describe a newly married woman.

“I have been an NRM member for 15 years. If you have a wife for 15 years and still call her a mugole, what kind of husband are you?” Tayebwa remarked. He added that he joined the NRM in 2010 and has since consistently mobilised support for the party in his constituency.
The Deputy Speaker cited his electoral record in Ruhinda North Constituency, noting that he secured victory unopposed in 2016 and again in 2026, while delivering more than 90 percent support for the party in the 2021 elections.
Tayebwa also defended the manner in which he has presided over parliamentary proceedings, insisting that the decisions he has taken in Parliament have been in the best interests of both the NRM and Ugandans.
He urged NRM Members of Parliament to respect and uphold the party’s official positions, warning against using parliamentary platforms to attack President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni. According to Tayebwa, while Parliament provides room for debate, leaders must remain mindful of the party that sponsored them to office.
