Bushenyi - An anthrax outbreak has hit Bushenyi District, claiming one life and leaving nine people hospitalized, according to Dr. Eliab Nuwamanya, the Acting District Health Officer.
Dr. Nuwamanya confirmed that the disease, which is contracted by consuming meat contaminated with anthrax, has been reported in the sub-counties of Ruhumuro and Kyabugimbi.
He said nine patients exhibiting symptoms of anthrax—including nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and fever—have been admitted to Kyabugimbi Health Centre IV.
“Most patients were admitted to Kyabugimbi Health Centre IV, where they are currently being treated, and we can confirm they are improving,” said Dr. Nuwamanya.
This is not the first anthrax incident in the district. In October last year, an outbreak occurred in the villages of Kafunjo and Rwenyena in Kitagata Parish, Kyeizooba Sub-county, claiming two lives.
According to Dr. Robert Natukunda, the District Veterinary Officer, four cattle have died during the current outbreak.
Dr. Natukunda emphasized the importance of following veterinary guidelines to control the spread of the disease. These include:
He added that early detection makes it possible to vaccinate livestock to prevent further spread.
Bushenyi Resident District Commissioner Emmy Ngabirano urged residents to avoid buying meat from unauthorized butcheries. He emphasized the need for community sensitization about anthrax risks and prevention.
“We will educate communities on how to avoid the disease,” Ngabirano said. “People must practice good hygiene, such as hand washing and proper waste disposal, to prevent the spread.”
