KAMPALA – The Uganda Police has successfully arrested Kato Geoffrey, who is accused of kidnapping 2-year-old Ayan Makanga on October 10, 2024. The suspect allegedly lured the child’s mother, Nayakaisiki Fatumah, a resident of Kireka-Kamuli in Kira Municipality, to invite him to her home under the pretense of discussing personal matters. According to police spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire, while Fatumah was preparing tea, Geoffrey fled with the child. Later that evening, the suspect sent a WhatsApp message to the mother, demanding a ransom of UGX 150 million for the safe return of her child.
The distressed parents reported the incident to the Kira Division Police, triggering a swift investigation by the Crime Intelligence Directorate. Yesterday, police apprehended Geoffrey in Kigarama Village, Kasanda District, and successfully rescued 2-year-old Ayan, who was found in good health. The child has since been reunited with their parents.
Geoffrey is currently in police custody and will be charged in court soon. Police commend the investigative task force for their diligent work and the parents for promptly reporting the incident, which significantly contributed to the quick resolution of the case.
