KAMWENGE
Residents of Kahunge and Kamwenge sub-counties in Kamwenge District can now breathe a sigh of relief following the successful capture and relocation of a stray elephant that had caused widespread fear in the area.
The elephant, which had reportedly strayed into community land and threatened the safety of residents and their property, was safely captured by a team from the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) and translocated to Queen Elizabeth National Park.
UWA spokesperson Bashir Hangi commended residents for remaining calm and cooperating with wildlife officials throughout the operation.
“We thank the communities of Kahunge and Kamwenge for their patience and cooperation during this exercise. The elephant has been safely relocated to Queen Elizabeth National Park, where it belongs, and the situation has now been fully contained,” Hangi said.
He added that such interventions are part of UWA’s ongoing efforts to mitigate human-wildlife conflict and ensure the safety of both communities and wildlife.
The successful operation has restored calm in the affected areas, with residents expressing relief after days of uncertainty.
