BUDUDA — Two suspects have been charged in connection with the mismanagement of Parish Development Model (PDM) funds in Bududa District. Wakoko Kassim, the Parish Chief of Bunandutu, and Nakhaima Francis, a public service employee, were arraigned today before the Bududa Chief Magistrates Court, facing multiple charges related to the misuse of PDM funds.

According to the Anti-Corruption Taskforce, working in collaboration with the Criminal Investigations Directorate and the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, Wakoko Kassim is accused of defrauding millions of shillings from members of the Bunandutu PDM SACCO. Kassim allegedly obtained money from several beneficiaries under false pretences, claiming the funds were needed to process their PDM disbursements, which was not the case.

Nakhaima Francis faces charges of falsifying official records. Nakhaima, along with others still at large, allegedly filed false returns and made fraudulent entries regarding the Bumakita PDM SACCO funds. They are accused of registering non-beneficiaries under the scheme, thereby diverting funds intended for the rightful recipients.

Both suspects have been remanded until November 5, 2024, pending further investigations. Authorities are continuing to pursue additional suspects who remain at large in connection with the case.

The Parish Development Model is a key government initiative aimed at alleviating poverty by empowering communities through financial support, and such fraudulent activities undermine its goals.

The case highlights ongoing efforts by the government to root out corruption and ensure transparency in the management of public funds, particularly those meant to support grassroots development.
