Among said, Africans nolonnger trust their governments

Speaker of Parliament Anita Among has expressed concern over the growing public trust deficit among African citizens towards their respective governments, attributing it to corruption and poor service delivery.
She made the remarks during the official opening of the 5th African Organisation of Public Accounts Committees (AFROPAC) Assembly, which is being held under the theme: “Illicit Financial Flows and Fostering Public Financial Resilience.” The assembly, taking place from March 17 to 21, 2025, is being hosted at Golden Tulip Hotel in Kampala.

“In almost every country on the continent, there is a growing deficit of public trust in governments because citizens do not get what they expect from their leaders,” Among stated. “These funds are not being used properly, leading to poor service delivery, widening economic inequality, and an escalating public debt crisis. The result is a society where the rich grow richer while the poor remain trapped in poverty.”

Among emphasized the fundamental social contract between governments and their citizens, where taxpayers contribute to state operations with the expectation of receiving quality public services in return. However, she lamented that in many African countries, this expectation is not met due to mismanagement of resources and lack of accountability.

The AFROPAC Assembly, which has brought together public finance experts, policymakers, and auditors from across Africa, seeks to address these challenges by promoting financial accountability, transparency, and the fight against illicit financial flows that drain resources meant for public service delivery.

The discussions at the summit are expected to yield policy recommendations aimed at enhancing fiscal discipline and restoring public confidence in African governance systems.
