LWENGO
A family journey ended in heartbreaking tragedy early Saturday morning when seven members of the same family were killed in a horrific road crash along the Masaka–Mbarara Highway in Lwengo District. The accident occurred at about 4:30 a.m. at Njagalakasayi, plunging the community into shock and grief as news spread that no one in the car survived. According to the Traffic Police spokesperson, Michael Kananura, the fatal crash involved a Fuso Fighter truck, registration number UBP 510V, and a Toyota Fielder, registration number UBH 476W.
Preliminary police investigations indicate that the Toyota Fielder, which was travelling from the Masaka side, attempted to overtake a queue of vehicles before colliding head-on with the oncoming truck.
“All seven occupants of the Toyota Fielder died on the spot,” Kananura said.
Police identified the deceased as Ivan Niwagaba, 38; Brenda Ainembabazi, 37; Turihobabwe Sayuni, 39; Keith Agaba, 10; Keitha Atuhire; Masaiko Kenene, 5; and Keron Agaba, 2.
All the children perished in the car accident
Traffic police officers rushed to the scene and launched investigations to establish the full circumstances surrounding the crash. The wreckage was later cleared to restore traffic flow along the busy highway.
In the wake of the tragedy, police have renewed their appeal to motorists to exercise maximum caution, especially during night travel.
Kananura warned drivers against reckless overtaking, noting that poor visibility and fatigue greatly increase the risk of fatal accidents.
He further advised motorists to avoid unnecessary night journeys and to ensure they are well rested before undertaking long-distance travel.
The Masaka–Mbarara Highway is one of Uganda’s busiest routes and has in recent years recorded numerous fatal crashes, many of them linked to dangerous overtaking and speeding.
