Mitooma - The Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Thomas Tayebwa, has emphasized the importance of women's inclusion in efforts to combat poverty in their communities. He made the call while presiding over the launch of Elevate Her Uganda, a non-governmental organization that aims to empower women and young girls through skills training, education, and advocacy against gender-based violence. The event took place at Ruhinda Secondary School in Mitooma Town Council, Mitooma District, on Saturday, April 5, 2024.
Tayebwa encouraged women to strategize and take initiative in their communities. He also highlighted the importance of having a solid foundation or ongoing projects that others can support, and stressed the need for women to collaborate with their leaders to drive positive change.
"Women should take the initiative in the fight against poverty by ensuring they have something to start with, so that others can support them," Tayebwa said.
Minister of Health, Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng, echoed his sentiments, emphasizing the importance of empowering young girls for sustainable development.
"Empowering young girls is crucial for sustainable development in our communities," she noted.
Internal Affairs Minister, Maj. Gen. Kahinda Otafiire, who also serves as the Member of Parliament for Ruhinda County Constituency, urged leaders to focus on serving their people by offering practical solutions to their problems.
"Leaders should prioritize the needs of their people and work towards finding solutions to their challenges, rather than pursuing personal interests," he said.
Meanwhile, Natukunda Loyce, Executive Director of Elevate Her Uganda, reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to supporting all women, regardless of background.
"We are dedicated to empowering women across Uganda, not just in Mitooma, but throughout the country," she said.
