A mother of four allegedly poisoned all her children in Busabala on Monday night, just hours before National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) officials, backed by police, demolished houses in the area.
According to preliminary reports, the woman, whose identity is yet to be officially released, is said to have taken the desperate action amid fears over the impending demolition of her home, which was constructed in a wetland area near the Entebbe Expressway. All four children, aged between 2 and 12 years, were pronounced dead upon arrival at a nearby health facility. The mother was rushed to hospital in critical condition after she also ingested the poison.

Residents of Busabala woke up to a scene of chaos and grief as NEMA enforcement teams, heavily guarded by police, razed down dozens of houses starting early Tuesday morning. Hundreds of residents gathered at the scene, many openly weeping as bulldozers tore through their homes.
“They didn’t give us any warning. We were told the houses were in the swamp and had to go, but people have lived here for years,” said one distressed resident who declined to be named.

NEMA officials maintain that the structures were illegally built in protected wetlands, posing environmental risks and violating regulations aimed at preserving the fragile ecosystem near the Entebbe Expressway. The operation is part of a wider government campaign to reclaim wetlands and enforce environmental laws.

Police have cordoned off the area and launched investigations into the poisoning incident. Preliminary findings suggest the mother acted out of despair following the anticipated loss of her home and livelihood.
This incident comes amid growing tensions in areas marked for demolition, where residents claim they received little or no prior notice or alternative resettlement plans.
The mother remains under medical care as authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the deaths of the four children.

More updates are expected as police and NEMA issue official statements later today.
