Sheema - The Sheema Municipal Veterinary Officer, Amanya Richards, in collaboration with security officials, has stopped the slaughter of seven cows due to inconsistent documentation.
The cows, owned by Kiiza Moris Nunu, the former Chairperson of Sheema Municipality Butchers’ Twetungure Association, were intercepted on Tuesday, December 24, 2024, at the Sheema Municipal Council abattoir.

According to Amanya, the documents accompanying the animals contained conflicting information. The LC1 Chairman's letter stated that the cows were purchased from Mirongo Village in Kashare Subcounty, Mbarara District, while the inter-district veterinary movement permit was issued in Kashongi Subcounty, Kiruhura District.
“These contradictions in the origin and movement of the animals raise serious concerns, and we cannot allow the slaughter until the matter is resolved,” Amanya explained.

Documents that were refused

"The discrepancies in the documents pose a risk to public health and undermine our efforts to ensure accountability in livestock movement..." Amanya Richards said.

However, Kiiza Moris insists the cows have all the required documents issued by the relevant authorities, arguing that there is no legitimate reason to block the slaughter.

The impasse has sparked debate among stakeholders in the local meat supply chain as authorities investigate the discrepancies further.
