Bushenyi
The National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) in Bushenyi District has commissioned the extension of piped water to several hard-to-reach villages in Bushenyi-Ishaka Municipality, marking a major step toward improved access to safe and clean water for residents in the hilly areas of Nyakabirizi Division.
The newly commissioned extension, which draws water from the Warugo Water Project in Kakanju, will now serve the villages of Irembezi, Matyaazyo, Nyakahita A and B, Muhire, and Rwemishwa.
For years, these communities have struggled with water scarcity, particularly Irembezi, where the difficult terrain made it hard to implement previous water infrastructure projects.
The commissioning event, held on Tuesday, August 26, 2025, attracted local leaders, community members, and NWSC officials, who gathered to witness this milestone.
Sam Kigundu, NWSC Area Manager for Bushenyi, praised the swift completion of the project, which took just one month. The extension includes the installation of more than ten public water taps across the beneficiary villages.
“This extension is part of our continued efforts to ensure that no Ugandan is left behind when it comes to access to clean and safe water. It is particularly meaningful for hilly communities like Irembezi, which have historically been underserved,” Kigundu said.
Local leaders welcomed the project as a breakthrough in addressing chronic water shortages.
“With the extension of piped water from Warugo to these villages, we can confidently say that the long-standing problem of water scarcity is becoming history,” said Ainomugisha, a local leader.

The project is part of a broader national initiative aimed at achieving universal access to piped water in all Ugandan villages, in line with Vision 2040 and national development goals.
Hon. Annet Katusiime Mugisha, the District Woman Member of Parliament for Bushenyi District—who has played a key role in advocating for water projects in the area—reaffirmed her commitment to ensuring that every community has access to safe water.
“This is a big win for our people. Access to clean water should not depend on where you live. I remain committed to pushing for water coverage in every corner of Bushenyi District,” she said.
She also extended appreciation to President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni for his support and leadership in rural development.
“We thank the President for prioritizing water access for our people. His vision is being realized on the ground,” Katusiime added.
Elineo Nuwagaba, the Customer Relations Officer for NWSC Bushenyi, assured residents that the corporation would continue engaging communities to ensure smooth access and proper maintenance of the new water services.
