Voters in Sheema South Constituency have criticised their Member of Parliament, Dickens Mushemeza, for allegedly failing to deliver on key development pledges made during the 2021 campaigns.
Christopher Nuwamanya, the NRM chairperson for Buraro Ward in Kitagata Town Council and former coordinator of Mushemeza's campaigns in the area, said he was part of a 10-member “high command” that helped plan campaign strategies for the constituency. However, he said the team eventually grew frustrated after realising that no tangible development had taken place.
“During one of Mushemeza’s high command meetings, we agreed to hire electric poles at Shs500,000 each as a tactic to win the NRM primary elections. Yet after winning, he abandoned the electorate,” Nuwamanya said, accusing Mushemeza of using deceptive strategies to secure votes.
Mushemeza, who has represented Sheema South in Parliament since 2021, recently lost the NRM party flag to his long-time political rival and party historian, Prof. Ephraim Kamuntu, who garnered 16,442 votes against Mushemeza’s 11,616.
Christopher further criticised Mushemeza for failing to rally behind the party flag bearer, opting instead to run as an independent candidate. “Mushemeza claims to be NRM, but I wonder why he chose to run as an independent against the party flag bearer,” he questioned.
Rovance Ssentara of Kimono Cell in Kitagata Town Council added that basic services such as water and electricity extension have stalled since 2021. “We want a leader who can push for development and address our problems so that we get quick solutions,” she said.
Speaking to his supporters in Kitagata Town yesterday, Prof. Ephraim Kamuntu promised to follow up on stalled projects in the constituency. His agenda includes upgrading Kitagata General Hospital to regional referral status, extending the Kabwohe–Kitagata–Kabira–Rukungiri road, and improving piped water and electricity supply.
The Sheema South race has attracted several aspirants, including Prof. Ephraim Kamuntu (NRM party flag bearer), Elijah Dickens Mushemeza (Independent, incumbent MP), Tomson Bandiho Mwesigwa (Independent), Niwenyesiga Emmanuel (Independent), Rwamugundu Emmanuel Arinaitwe (PFF), and Aggrey Nuwandinda (NUP).
