The house confirms its first dedicated haute couture show since 2016, set for Paris Couture Week in January 2027.

PARIS

Haute couture has a way of making fashion people hold their breath. This week, Versace gave them a reason. The Italian house confirmed that Atelier Versace will return to the official Paris Couture Week calendar in January 2027, with new Chief Creative Officer Pieter Mulier presenting his first full Atelier Versace collection.

The news, first reported by WWD and confirmed in a Versace statement, was picked up by outlets including StyleRave, DSCENE and Hypebeast on October 28 and 29, 2026. Paris Couture Week runs January 25 to 28, 2027; the exact date and venue of the Versace show have not yet been announced.

A Decade Away

Atelier Versace has deep roots. According to StyleRave, the couture line began under founder Gianni Versace and presented its first collection in Paris in 1990. Its last dedicated couture runway show took place in July 2016, which means the January presentation will be the label's first in more than a decade.

The house did not leave couture entirely. The line continued through private client commissions and red-carpet dressing, a quieter form of the craft that keeps ateliers busy without the spectacle of a runway. As a preview of what is to come, StyleRave notes that Nicole Kidman wore an asymmetric black lace gown from Atelier Versace to the Los Angeles premiere of Practical Magic 2 on August 31.

The Designer

Versace and Prada Group announced Mulier's appointment as Chief Creative Officer, effective July 1, 2026, in a statement saying the choice "marks the beginning of a new chapter for the brand." Mulier's résumé, as listed by StyleRave, includes stints with Raf Simons, Jil Sander, Dior and Calvin Klein, and he is currently Creative Director at Alaïa.

That background is telling. Mulier is known as a designer with a sculptor's feel for construction, trained in houses where the cut of a garment is the point. Couture is the discipline where that sensibility is most visible, with no mass-market compromise to dilute it. Versace, a brand synonymous with body-conscious glamour and bold graphic energy, offers a very different canvas from the restraint of his previous posts, and the January collection will be the first real look at how he reconciles them.

The Prada Factor

The return arrives during a transition. Prada Group acquired Versace in 2025, a deal that ABC reported was worth almost $1.4 billion, according to the StyleRave account. DSCENE reports that Prada Group CEO Andrea Guerra told investors, in the company's nine-month results, that integration was progressing well and that Versace's creative team had moved into developing finished products. Prada Group chairman Patrizio Bertelli and Guerra have both spoken about continuing Versace's legacy; the sources paraphrase their comments rather than quoting them.

A couture show is as much a strategic statement as a creative one. It tells clients, press and investors that the new owners intend to invest in the house's most rarefied expression, not just its handbags and sunglasses. Couture rarely turns a direct profit; it earns its keep by lending prestige to everything else.

The Reading of the Calendar

The timing within the couture calendar is also notable. Paris Couture Week concentrates the most labor-intensive work in fashion into four days, and a house that has been absent from the runway for a decade must earn its place on a crowded schedule. A return by a house of Versace's profile, with a designer whose first full collection is the draw, guarantees attention from editors and clients alike.

It is also worth noting how much has changed since July 2016, the date of the last dedicated Atelier Versace show. The house has since changed ownership, and now has a new chief creative officer. The January show will therefore be less a revival than a reintroduction, with every element, from the casting to the choice of venue, read as a statement of intent.

Why Couture, Why Now

Fashion has spent the past two years reshuffling its creative leadership, and couture week has become one of the most visible stages for new designers to define themselves. A designer-led debut at that level, in a setting where craft is the headline, is a bold opening move.

For Versace specifically, it is also a chance to reset the narrative. The house has often been discussed in terms of its past, the 1990s supermodels, the safety-pin dress, the Medusa head. A fresh couture collection gives it an opportunity to speak in the present tense.

What This Means for You

Most of us will never order a couture gown, but couture is where ideas start. Silhouettes, embroidery techniques and fabric innovations shown in January often trickle into ready-to-wear and even high-street collections within a season or two. Watch the January show for hints about where glamour is heading in 2027.

If you are a fan of the house, the immediate practical step is simply to mark the dates. The show will fall within January 25 to 28, and details are expected to follow. Expect red-carpet appearances in the interim; Kidman's August appearance suggests the atelier is already quietly at work.

And if you are interested in the craft itself, this is a rare chance to see hand-finished garments presented at the highest level by a house that has not shown in this format since 2016.

Looking Ahead

There is still a lot we do not know: the venue, the number of looks, the mood. What we do know is that a house with a storied couture heritage has chosen a new creative leader and a high-profile stage to restart the conversation.
January is a few months away, which is a long time in fashion and no time at all in couture. The ateliers, presumably, are already sewing.
