More than 100 secondary school students under the Bunyaruguru Muslim Youth Development Association (BMYDA) have completed an intensive three-day leadership and spiritual training workshop. The event concluded today at the Ryeru Girls’ School campus in Rutoto Sub-county, Rubirizi District.

The training was designed to equip young Muslims with the tools to navigate modern social challenges while remaining rooted in their faith. Sheikh Zakaria Kambugu, the Project Coordinator for BMYDA and a lead facilitator, explained that the workshop focused on four core pillars: leadership skills, fostering unity and cultural exchange, strengthening Islamic values, and promoting community development through innovation and education.

Sheik Kisheka Iddi Abdulahumani, the Secretary for Daawa in Greater Bushenyi, urged the students to act as ambassadors for Islam by maintaining high moral standards. He cautioned the youth against being exploited by political actors for destructive purposes.
“We want our youth to be informed and aware of legal activities, especially since many politicians target the energetic youth to use them in rebellions or to set bad examples,” Sheik Kisheka noted. “When you touch the youth, you touch the parents and the community at large. By teaching them to use polite language and uphold moral uprightness, they will become the shield against social evils in their schools and neighborhoods.”

The Resident District Commissioner (RDC) of Rubirizi, Mr. Kinene Ahamed, commended the association for the initiative, noting that such training is vital for mindset change and national stability.
“This training helps students learn how to love their religion while developing the discipline and leadership skills needed for growth,” RDC Kinene stated. He added that the program would help students carry out "effective preaching" in public, focusing on Islamic laws that protect human life and wealth, while also addressing critical social issues such as preventing early marriage and negative peer influence.

The workshop concluded with a call for the participants to build a strong network of Muslim youth dedicated to positive impact and social transformation across the district.
