The Bushenyi District LC5 Chairperson and incumbent, Hon. Jaffari Basajjabalaba, has withdrawn from the 2026 general election race, leaving former journalist Prosper Twebaze unopposed for the seat. The decision follows consultations between Basajjabalaba and top leaders of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM). Sources close to the discussions say the move was aimed at promoting party unity ahead of next year’s polls, with expectations that Basajjabalaba could be rewarded with a top government appointment after the elections.

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni confirmed the development, praising Basajjabalaba’s decision as a demonstration of party discipline.
“I met my daughter Resty Namutamba from Luuka and Mr. Jaffari Basajjabalaba, the LC5 Chairman of Bushenyi, both of whom belong to the NRM. I wish to commend them for accepting to withdraw from the race in favor of the NRM flag bearers. This is in line with our NRM principles and it should be promoted because it saves time and eliminates divisions,” President Museveni said.
Twebaze, a popular radio presenter turned politician, defeated Basajjabalaba in the NRM party primaries held in July 2025. He won by a landslide, polling 66,101 votes (86.2%) against Basajjabalaba’s 10,597 votes (13.8%), to become the official NRM flag bearer for Bushenyi LC5 chairperson in the 2026 general election.
Following his victory, Twebaze formally retired from his media career in May 2025 to concentrate on his political ambitions. A resident of Nyeibingo Central, Ruhumuro Sub-county in Igara East, Twebaze is the son of the late Barigye Clever and Mrs. Sylvia Barigye.
His media journey began in 2014 at World FM Radio Ishaka, later moving to Freedom Radio Kabale in 2016, before joining BFM Radio Bushenyi in 2018, where he rose to become Programs Director.
With Basajjabalaba stepping aside, Prosper Twebaze now stands unopposed for the Bushenyi LC5 seat, positioning himself as the district’s next political leader.
