Sheema – Tragedy struck Rweyeshera Cell in Kyabandara Ward, Sheema Municipality, on Monday night when a mother and her three-year-old child died in a house fire. The deceased, Juliet Nuwaha, perished with her child after flames gutted their home, destroying beds, cooking utensils, and a Bajaj Boxer motorcycle. Her husband, Godwin Nuwaha, a boda-boda rider from Kabwohe town, narrowly escaped but was admitted to Kabwohe Health Centre IV with serious injuries.
Speaking to Torch Media Africa, from his hospital bed, Nuwaha recounted:
"I came home around 11:00 pm and found my wife and child already asleep. I noticed a matchbox on a stool in the bedroom but didn’t think it was dangerous."
He added that the fire started early in the morning.
"Around 6:00 am, when my wife woke up, the fire started. I tried to help them, but it spread very quickly," he said.

David Barigye, LC1 Chairperson of Rweyeshera, revealed that the couple had been experiencing marital problems.
"They had been quarrelling for nearly two months. Juliet had just returned home after her husband reportedly left her shortly after their wedding," he said.
Authorities are investigating the cause of the fire, with suspicions that Juliet may have started it deliberately.
Leaders React
Sam Orikunda, Deputy Resident Commissioner of Sheema, condemned the incident.
"It is very sad. Couples having problems should seek help from leaders, family elders, or counseling instead of letting conflicts end in tragedy," he said.
Moses Bishweko, LC3 Chairperson of Sheema Central Division, added:
"This is a reminder of the dangers of unresolved family disagreements. Families must talk and solve issues peacefully."
The child’s body was burnt beyond recognition, while the mother’s body was taken to Kabwohe Health Centre IV mortuary for postmortem as investigations continue.
