Bushenyi - Police in Bushenyi District have launched an investigation after a first-year nursing student at Kampala International University (KIU), Ishaka campus, was found dead on the morning of May 9, 2025.
Greater Bushenyi Police spokesperson, SP Tayebwa Apollo, confirmed the incident and identified the deceased as Lukoma John, 20, a first-year nursing student at KIU Western Campus.
The body was discovered hanging from a rope tied to an avocado tree near the male students’ residence. It was found at approximately 6:40 a.m. by a KIU Ishaka security guard, who promptly reported the incident to Bushenyi District Police under Case Reference No. D.E.F. 010/2025.
Bushenyi Police's scene of crime officers, along with the homicide unit, conducted an investigation at the scene. The body was later retrieved and transported to the KIU Teaching Hospital mortuary for a post-mortem examination.
Preliminary reports indicate that Lukoma may have been struggling with depression linked to unpaid tuition fees, with end-of-semester exams fast approaching. However, police are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding his death.
SP Tayebwa urged students and members of the public to seek support from family or professional counselors when facing personal difficulties.
“We encourage anyone going through challenges to seek help. The police will provide further updates as the investigation progresses,” SP Tayebwa added.
