The national U17 men's football team, the Uganda Cubs, is continuing preparations for the 2026 AFCON Qualifiers CECAFA Zone Championship, due in Rwanda from October 5 to 25.
A provisional squad of 39 players entered residential camp early this week and has been undergoing intensive training under Assistant Coach Steven Bengo.
The provisional squad comprises six goalkeepers, 15 defenders, nine midfielders, and nine strikers, from whom the final squad to represent the country will be named.
Many of the players were part of the Uganda team that competed at the same championship held in Ethiopia, where they finished runners-up to Tanzania following a 3–2 loss to the eventual champions. That result qualified them for the Africa Cup of Nations U17 championship, where they went on to qualify for the FIFA U17 World Cup for the second consecutive year — the tournament due in November and December in Qatar.
Others are a crop of new players identified through the FUFA Schools of Excellence programme, a flagship talent development initiative by the federation backed by the FIFA Talent Development Scheme.
The squad also includes attacker Sebastian Quinn Fisher, who is a brother of goalkeeper Oliver Fisher, who was part of the U20 team. The two, who feature for Scottish second-division side Partick Thistle, are of Scottish descent.
The team will continue intensive training until the start of October before travelling to Rwanda for the championship.

Uganda has dominated the U17 CECAFA region with consecutively won titles until last year, when they fell to Tanzania but still made it to the continental showpiece and secured qualification to a second consecutive World Cup.
