RUBIRIZI
UWEZO Uganda and the Hope for Mothers and Children Agency (HOMACA) have jointly launched a new literacy initiative in Rubirizi schools, following a stakeholder dialogue held today at the district headquarters. The program aims to enhance numeracy and literacy skills, critical thinking, and problem-solving abilities among young learners aged 4 to 16. The initiative is a direct response to recent survey data indicating significant challenges in primary education standards across the district.
Sam Barigye, Director of HOMACA in Rubirizi District, presented findings from a community survey that assessed 675 children from 300 households and 15 schools. The results highlighted a severe gap in foundational learning:
According to a community survey assessment 675 children aged 4-16 from 300 households and 15 schools in Rubirizi district noted that the survey revealed low pupil turnout and poor teacher-pupil ratios, with 10% of teachers were absent during the assessment. Many Primary 3 children struggled with Primary 2 work, and by Primary 7, 14% still couldn't do Primary 2 reading and writing in 2025.The survey aimed to evaluate children's literacy and numeracy skills, teacher presence, and community involvement in school governance also to identity the number of primary schools and children in the next grade.
