The Uganda Police Force has announced strict nationwide measures that will govern the observance of the National Cleaning Day on Saturday, July 25, 2026, including a three-hour suspension of most traffic movement to allow communities to participate in the government-led sanitation exercise.
The directives, contained in a press statement issued by Police Headquarters on Friday, state that the National Cleaning Day will be observed from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. across the country.
According to police, the exercise is part of the Government of Uganda's broader campaign to promote a cleaner environment, improve public health and reduce diseases linked to poor sanitation and improper waste disposal.
Authorities have called upon all Ugandans—including residents, traders, institutions, motorists and community leaders—to fully participate in cleaning their surroundings during the designated hours.
To facilitate the exercise, police announced that traffic movement will be restricted nationwide, with all vehicles, motorcycles, bicycles and water vessels prohibited from operating during the three-hour period unless they are responding to emergencies.

Officials said members of the public are expected to remain within their communities, engage in cleaning activities, and resume their normal routines only after the exercise concludes at 10:00 a.m.
Police, however, clarified that essential services will continue uninterrupted. Exemptions have been granted to emergency medical services, security vehicles on official duty, and cross-border vehicles using the country's major transport corridors.
Individuals travelling for scheduled medical treatment have been advised to carry supporting medical documents, while health workers should possess official identification to facilitate smooth passage through security checkpoints.
The Uganda Police Force also urged citizens to cooperate with officers deployed to oversee the exercise and avoid confrontations during the enforcement of the temporary restrictions.
"In case of any concern, members of the public should seek guidance from the nearest police officer or supervisor on duty," the statement said.
The National Cleaning Day forms part of ongoing government initiatives to encourage collective responsibility for environmental conservation, improve sanitation standards, and create healthier communities across Uganda.
Police said compliance with the temporary restrictions will be essential to ensuring that the nationwide exercise is conducted safely, peacefully, and successfully, and appealed to the public to support the initiative through active participation.
