MASAKA - Kasirye Elias, a businessman, land dealer, and moneylender based in Lukaya, has been arraigned before the Masaka Chief Magistrates Court on multiple charges, including malicious damage, forceful entry, unlawful eviction, and theft. The charges stem from actions allegedly taken by Kasirye to claim ownership over a piece of land he did not legally possess.
According to the Anti-Corruption Unit, which worked with the Criminal Investigations Directorate and the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, Kasirye conspired with the daughters of the late Lukwago Francis in 2021 to forge a backdated sale agreement from 2018. The forged document suggested that Lukwago had sold him a kibanja (customary land tenure) with valuable eucalyptus trees, allegedly intending to dispossess Mr. Walakira Paul, the rightful buyer.
Using the forged agreement, Kasirye reportedly processed a land title in his name. In June 2024, without any court order, he allegedly forced Walakira off the property, cut down and sold the eucalyptus trees, and graded the land, altering its status entirely.
The court has remanded Kasirye until November 5, 2024, pending further proceedings. The case underscores the Ugandan government’s commitment to addressing land-related fraud and protecting the rights of lawful property owners.
