It was a uniquely organised opening ceremony for the USSSA Ball Games I, arguably the most outstanding in the history of national secondary school sports competitions, as host Seroma Christian High School staged a one-of-a-kind event to officially curtain-raise the 2026 games at its Mukono-based campus.

The seating arrangement at the newly constructed main stadium stood out. Student-athletes were calmly seated on the terraces, while invited guests occupied the glass-fitted VIP lounge. The chief guest and other dignitaries sat on a raised podium positioned opposite the athletes—an arrangement not witnessed at any previous edition since the inception of the games in 2011.

Spiritually, it was also a first, as a religious leader—Bishop Hannington Mutebi of Mukono—officiated at the games, making the occasion even more distinctive.
As dusk fell, fireworks lit up the sky above Seroma Christian High School, creating a spectacular and memorable moment that will set a high benchmark for future hosts.

While addressing athletes and guests, Bishop Mutebi emphasised the importance of sports in shaping discipline and teamwork.
“Sports are very important. When you participate, you learn discipline, teamwork, and hard work. After classwork, you need to stay engaged so that your mind does not become idle—the devil’s workshop. As the saying goes, ‘All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.’ Through sports, we produce men and women who are not dull,” Bishop Mutebi said.

Seroma’s Resident Director, Amelia Kyambadde, expressed gratitude to the Ministry of Education and Sports and USSSA for entrusting the school with hosting the prestigious national event.
“We are grateful to the ministry for the trust placed in us to host these games. It has not been easy, but we are doing our best to ensure a successful conclusion. To the student-athletes, you have come here to learn and unlearn, compete and engage. Let us not compete as enemies, but as participants who understand that only one will emerge victorious,” Kyambadde said.

The games continue with the girls’ football Round of 32 matches on Sunday, while other disciplines remain in their group stages.
