The Minister for Education and Sports, Ms. Janet Kataha Museveni, urged Ugandans to embrace government programs intended to eradicate poverty and foster socio-economic change.
The minister made these remarks during a Parish Development Model (PDM) monitoring baraza with the people of Kikoni Model Parish in Ruhaama County, Ntungamo District, on Tuesday, October 12, at Mutanoga Playground.
Minister Janet noted that some PDM beneficiaries have started investing the funds in non-profitable ventures, although the PDM funds are intended for value addition in households to combat poverty across Uganda. She emphasized the importance of government programs such as the Parish Development Model, Emyooga, and Entandikwa, stressing that if these programs are utilized effectively, a large percentage of Ugandans could achieve moderate wealth. She also criticized local leaders and Members of Parliament for not adequately sensitizing beneficiaries on the best ways to use PDM funds.
According to the PDM Coordinator through the Chief Administrative Officer, Mr. Mathias Ndifuna, Ntungamo District received UGX 26.779 billion during the disbursement of PDM funds. Over UGX 26 billion has been loaned out to 26,274 beneficiaries, while over UGX 510 million remains on the district account.
The area chairperson of Muyumbu Cell, Samuel Kyabikagire, highlighted some challenges hindering development in the area, including a lack of electricity, clean water, and poor school infrastructure and roads.
The PDM initiative was launched on February 26, 2022, by the President of Uganda, Yoweri Museveni, as a strategy to improve service delivery and alleviate poverty at the grassroots level.
