Police in Kanungu District are investigating a suspected case of domestic violence that left a 51-year-old man dead on Tuesday afternoon. The deceased, Ngambeki Spiriano, a resident of Group Farm B Cell, Kibimbiri Parish in Kihihi Sub-county, reportedly died instantly following a violent domestic altercation with his estranged wife, Nzabaruntume Dinavance, 48. The incident occurred on November 18, 2025, at around 2:00pm at the couple’s former home.
According to Kigezi Region Police Spokesperson Elly Maate, the two had been married for years and had children together before separating. Ngambeki later relocated to Kebisoni in Rukungiri District, where he married a second wife, leaving Dinavance at their marital home in Kanungu, where she has been living with her grandchild.
On the fateful day, Ngambeki reportedly travelled with his second wife to Kanungu but left her at Kibimbiri Trading Centre before proceeding alone to check on Dinavance. It is alleged that an altercation broke out behind the house, escalating into a serious fight in which both parties sustained severe injuries. Ngambeki died at the scene.
Police say that after realising her husband had died, Dinavance reportedly called their son-in-law, Benon, asking him to pick up his child. She then attempted to flee. When Benon arrived, he found his father-in-law lying dead near the back door of the house. His alarm drew neighbours, who apprehended Dinavance before handing her over to police.
Police officers responded promptly, re-arresting the suspect and securing the crime scene. Investigators recovered clothes suspected to belong to the deceased from a pit latrine behind the house after discovering that the body had been cleaned and dressed in different clothes. Statements were recorded from witnesses, and the scene was examined and documented.
The body was taken to Kihihi Health Centre IV for postmortem, while Dinavance was also taken for treatment after sustaining a deep cut on the head during the scuffle. Police say inquiries are ongoing to establish the cause of the fight that led to Ngambeki’s death.
