BUSHENYI
The National Resistance Movement (NRM) has dominated the recently concluded LC2 chairperson elections in Bushenyi District, with 71 of the district’s 72 parish chairpersons elected unopposed.
Only one parish elected an independent candidate, according to district authorities.
Bushenyi District has 72 parishes, and the results have been described by Deputy Resident District Commissioner (RDC) William Katsigazi as a reflection of the strong support for the NRM in the district.
Katsigazi said the results were consistent with the January general elections, in which President Yoweri Museveni secured 82% of the vote in Bushenyi.
“The results we are seeing in the LC2 elections are a reflection of what happened in the January elections, where President Museveni managed to secure 82% of the vote in Bushenyi,” Katsigazi said.
He described the local council elections as free, fair and peaceful, attributing the high number of unopposed NRM candidates to what he called the people’s support and love for the party.
“The elections were free, fair and non-violent. This achievement is a result of the good heart and love that the people have for their NRM party,” Katsigazi said.
He urged the newly elected leaders to use their positions to promote development and serve all residents regardless of their political affiliation.
NRM Dominance in Ibaare
The NRM’s dominance was also reflected in Ibaare Sub-county, where 40 local council leaders were sworn into office on Tuesday, August 11, 2026.
The leaders included four LC2 parish chairpersons and 36 LC1 chairpersons. The swearing-in ceremony was held at Ibaare Sub-county headquarters and was organised by the Ibaare Sub-county NRM Chairperson, Annet Birora Bakundaine, in partnership with Bushenyi District.
The ceremony was presided over by the Deputy Chief Administrative Officer (CAO), Kanyihamba.
Birora said Ibaare Sub-county registered more than 95% support for NRM candidates in both the LC1 and LC2 chairperson elections.
“I congratulate all the leaders who have taken the oath today. You have been entrusted with the responsibility of serving the people, so I urge you to serve everyone regardless of their political affiliation,” Birora said.
She urged the leaders to focus on community development and work with all residents.
“You are now leaders of everyone. Do not only serve the people who supported you. Work with all residents and ensure that Ibaare continues to develop,” she said.
The newly sworn-in leaders pledged to uphold the law and serve their communities diligently as they begin their new terms in office.
