Nyakatete Village, Kasaana Subcounty – Sheema South Member of Parliament, Prof. Elijah Dickens Mushemeza, has criticized President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni for failing to improve infrastructure during his 40 years in power.
Speaking at a burial in Nyakatete Village, Kasaana Central Parish, Prof. Mushemeza singled out road construction and maintenance as key areas where the government has fallen short.
"Even the President, who has been in power for 40 years, has failed to work on roads. They even abuse us for the roads he is supposed to work on," Mushemeza told the congregation.
NRM Primaries Defeat and Independent Candidacy
Prof. Mushemeza's remarks come amid his strained relationship with the ruling NRM party. In the recent NRM primaries for Sheema South, Prof. Ephraim Kamuntu polled 16,442 votes, while Mushemeza received 11,616 votes, giving Kamuntu the party flag.
After losing the NRM ticket, Mushemeza opted to contest as an independent candidate, a move that further widened rifts within the party. Notably, Mushemeza once headed the NRM Electoral Commission, making his decision to defy the party line controversial among critics.
An audio recording that has since gone viral on social media captures Mushemeza reiterating his criticism of the President’s failure to improve infrastructure. In the same clip, he vows to return as an independent candidate for Sheema South in the next parliamentary election.
Prof. Mushemeza’s remarks highlighted governance and service delivery concerns. He called on regional leaders and citizens to hold the President accountable for what he described as decades of neglect in infrastructure development.
