As the country counts down to the Christmas festivities, leaders in Bushenyi District have cautioned the public against excessive spending, warning that festive extravagance could undermine household financial stability.
The call was made by the Kyamuhunga Town Council LC III Chairperson, Mr Moses Bikanya, while presiding over the handover of Christmas gifts to members of the Kyamuhunga People’s SACCO (KYAPS) who participated in the SACCO’s Ekiterekye kya Christmas.
“Christmas is a time for joy, but it should not push families into unnecessary financial pressure. I urge our people to celebrate responsibly, continue saving, and invest for the future,” Mr Bikanya said.
He commended KYAPS for promoting a saving culture and supporting community development through practical initiatives, noting that SACCOs remain key drivers of grassroots economic transformation.
The Christmas giveaway exercise was conducted across all KYAPS branches, where various items were distributed to members. These included 27 cows, 26 goats, 25 mattresses, and other assorted hampers, benefiting over 400 members.
Meanwhile, the KYAPS General Manager, Atwijukire Johnbosco, reaffirmed the SACCO’s commitment to financial inclusion and community empowerment.
“Our focus is to economically empower members through consistent saving, responsible borrowing, and supporting other community-based initiatives, including parish development SACCOs,” Atwijukire said.
He added that Kyamuhunga People’s SACCO, headquartered in Butare, Kyamuhunga Town Council, Bushenyi District, has continued to expand its footprint to better serve members.
“Currently, KYAPS operates over six branches across the districts of Kamwenge, Mbarara, Kanungu, Ntungamo, Kyenjojo, Mitooma, and Rubirizi, bringing financial services closer to the people,” he noted.
On his part, the KYAPS Board Chairperson, Paul Kahigi Turyamureeba, said the Christmas initiative was aimed at appreciating loyal members while encouraging a culture of saving for development.
“These incentives are meant to give back to our members and motivate them to save. They also strengthen trust between the SACCO and its clients while reinforcing the importance of financial discipline,” Kahigi said.
He emphasized that KYAPS remains committed to supporting members’ long-term financial growth beyond seasonal celebrations.
