The Ministry of Health has unveiled a robust national response plan following the declaration of an Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) outbreak and its classification as a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) by the World Health Organization (WHO). The plan focuses on rapidly containing the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola, reducing illness and death, and minimizing social and economic disruption across the country.
According to the Ministry, the main objectives of the response plan are:
Multi-Sectoral Approach
The response will be coordinated through a multi-sectoral framework under the leadership of the Ministry of Health, organized around key operational pillars including:
The Ministry emphasized that both local and international partners are being mobilized to provide financial and technical support to ensure swift containment of the outbreak.
Health authorities have called on the public to remain vigilant, report suspected cases promptly, and cooperate with response teams. Citizens have also been urged to adhere to preventive measures such as regular handwashing, avoiding contact with bodily fluids, and observing safe burial practices.
This is Uganda’s latest battle with Ebola after previous outbreaks. The current response aims to leverage lessons learned from past epidemics to bring this outbreak under control as quickly as possible.
Further updates on the epidemiological situation and specific affected areas are expected from the Ministry of Health in the coming days.
