Police in Rukungiri District have launched investigations into the circumstances surrounding the attempted murder of Angello Twinomuhangi, an independent candidate for the Rukungiri District LC V chairmanship in the 2026 General Elections. Twinomuhangi was discovered tied up and unconscious on the night of January 6, 2026, at Minera Bridge in Nyarushanje Sub-county, at around 9:00 p.m. According to police, the incident was first reported by Byamukama Alphonse, the head teacher of St Jerome Secondary School, Ndama, who was driving from Nyarushanje towards Rukungiri Town.

Before reaching Minera Bridge, he was allegedly stopped by a boda boda rider who alerted him about a man who had been dumped beside a stationary motor vehicle. Upon approaching the scene, Byamukama reportedly found the victim tied, with a handkerchief across his mouth, while his hands were bound behind his back using what is suspected to be USB cables. He raised an alarm that attracted other residents, who later identified the victim as Twinomuhangi.

The matter was reported to Kebison Police Station, whose officers promptly responded to the scene. Twinomuhangi, who was found unconscious, was rescued and rushed to Nyakibale Hospital using his own vehicle for medical attention. A case of attempted murder was registered at Kebison Police Station. A team led by the Rukungiri District Police Commander (DPC), SSP Brian Ampaire, visited and documented the crime scene.

Police recorded statements from key witnesses and recovered exhibits, including two handkerchiefs and two suspected USB cables. The victim’s motor vehicle, registration number UA 527BH, was also removed from the scene and towed to Rukungiri Police Station for further examination and forensic analysis.

Confirming the incident, Kigezi Region Police Spokesperson Elly Maate said investigations are ongoing.
“Police are actively pursuing leads to identify and arrest the suspects involved in this attempted murder. We appeal to members of the public who may have information that can aid investigations to cooperate with police,” Maate said.

Efforts to trace and apprehend the suspects are continuing as police prepare to have them prosecuted in courts of law.
