Dr. Kizza Besigye wins Akufo-Addo Democracy prize while in prison

The award celebrates individuals who display courage and persistence in pursuit of democratic values despite intimidation or imprisonment

Ugandan opposition leader Dr. Kizza Besigye has been honoured with the Akufo-Addo Africa Democracy Award during the Democracy Union of Africa (DUA) Summit held yesterday in Nairobi, Kenya.
The award recognises Besigye’s decades-long struggle for democracy, good governance, and the rule of law in Uganda — a fight marked by repeated arrests, detentions, and his unwavering call for political freedom.
Despite being incarcerated in Luzira Prison, the recognition affirms that the ideals for which he has fought continue to inspire reformers and defenders of liberty across Africa.
For Besigye, who has spent much of his political life confronting state repression, the honour is deeply symbolic. It signifies that his personal sacrifices, along with those of countless Ugandans yearning for democratic governance, have not been in vain. From behind bars, he remains a voice of resilience. One DUA delegate reaffirmed his well-known declaration: “I aspire to live in a free, democratic country.”

According to the DUA, the award celebrates individuals who display courage and persistence in pursuit of democratic values despite intimidation or imprisonment.

Why Besigye Was Chosen
The Democracy Union of Africa cited Besigye’s longstanding activism, integrity, and courage under persecution as key reasons for his selection. Organisers praised his enduring leadership in championing democracy, saying he represents “the indomitable African spirit that refuses to bow to oppression.”
His influence, they noted, extends beyond Uganda’s borders, inspiring pro-democracy movements and opposition leaders across the continent.

About the Akufo-Addo Africa Democracy Award
Named after Ghanaian President Nana Akufo-Addo, the award honours African individuals and institutions that have made outstanding contributions to democracy, the rule of law, and human rights.
Presented by the Democracy Union of Africa, the award seeks to:

  • Celebrate defenders of democratic governance
  • Encourage political accountability and civic freedoms
  • Recognise the legitimacy of opposition voices
  • Promote non-violent struggle for political reform

Other Recipients
At the same Nairobi summit, Tanzanian opposition leader Tundu Lissu was also recognised as a “Champion of Democracy in Africa.”
Lissu, a lawyer and former presidential candidate, survived an assassination attempt in 2017 and continues to campaign for reform in Tanzania.
Sources indicate that the Akufo-Addo Democracy Award is relatively new, with Besigye and Lissu among its first honourees — a reflection of its exclusivity and prestige.

While Besigye remains detained, his recognition serves as a powerful continental salute to resilience, courage, and the enduring spirit of Uganda’s democratic struggle.
“Africa has heard his voice, even from behind prison walls,” one DUA delegate said during the ceremony.
In honouring him, the DUA urged African governments to respect dissent, uphold freedoms, and protect the rule of law — principles that Dr. Besigye has consistently defended at great personal cost.
