A team of students from Parental Care Nursery and Primary School in Bushenyi yesterday set off for Kigali, Rwanda, to participate in this year’s Pan-African Junior Schools Debate Championship.
The team will represent Uganda in the three-day continental competition, which began on Friday. The event has attracted more than 100 schools from across Africa, offering young debaters a platform to showcase their skills in public speaking, critical thinking, and teamwork.
While flagging off the students at Tuzza Hotel in Bushenyi Town, Bushenyi District Speaker Douglas Mucunguzi praised the school for its consistent excellence in both academics and co-curricular activities.

“Parental Care School continues to lift the district’s flag high through excellent PLE results and outstanding participation in national and international competitions,” Mucunguzi said. “We are proud of these young ambassadors representing Bushenyi at the continental level.”

Apollo Lee Kakonge, a parent at the school, encouraged the students to aim high.
“You are not going just to participate but to win,” Kakonge said. “Carry with you discipline, confidence, and commitment. You have all it takes to return home as champions.”

Kakonge, speaking on behalf of the parents, pledged continued support for the students.
“We shall continue supporting the school to ensure our children excel in both academics and co-curricular activities,” he added.

Headteacher Desmond Tayebwa emphasized the importance of debate in shaping young learners.
“Debate builds confidence, self-esteem, and critical thinking—skills that contribute greatly to academic success,” Tayebwa said. “We are confident that our team will perform exceptionally well.”

Next month, Parental Care Nursery and Primary School will also represent Uganda at the Africa Spelling Bee Competition in Algeria, after emerging the overall national winner.

This comes after their strong performance at last month’s Enjuba Spelling Bee held at Serena Hotel in Kampala. The school will compete alongside other top Ugandan schools, including Tororo Parents School and Pax Junior School. Arinaitwe Leah, one of the school’s debaters, said she was excited to represent Uganda on an international stage and hoped to make her school and district proud.

Over the years, Parental Care Nursery and Primary School has consistently ranked among Uganda’s top-performing institutions, excelling in both academics and co-curricular activities—a testament to its strong culture of excellence.
