Sheema – A fire gutted a carpentry workshop in Kabwohe Town, Kabwohe Division, Sheema Municipality, this morning, destroying property estimated to be worth over UGX 50 million.
The workshop, which contained timber, beds, chairs, and other carpentry materials, was completely consumed by the blaze. Nasuru Mugyerwa, the owner of the workshop, said the fire broke out suddenly, leaving no time to salvage anything.
“Everything inside was burnt to ashes—nothing could be saved,” Nasuru said.

Residents attempted to contain the fire by fetching water from a nearby channel, but the flames were too intense.
“We heard unusual sounds and rushed to see what was happening, only to find the fire spreading rapidly,” said Ainamatsiko Samson, a resident.
Kahwa Kahwa, the officer in charge of Sheema Central Police Station, said investigations have been launched into the cause of the fire.
Jemimah Buhanda, the Sheema District LC5 Chairperson, urged landlords to leave adequate space around buildings to allow for the rescue of property and lives during fire outbreaks.
“This tragedy has caused many people to lose their property. We continue to encourage people to build carefully and adopt measures to minimize fire risks,” she added.

The absence of a local fire brigade in Sheema District worsened the situation. The responding fire brigade came from Bushenyi, but by the time they arrived, most of the property had already been destroyed.
“This is why it’s difficult to control fires effectively in Sheema—because there is no district fire brigade,” said one of the district leaders.
Local leaders have appealed to the government and residents to be more cautious and to establish systems that can help prevent and combat future fires, in order to avoid further loss of life and property.
