The State House Anti-Corruption Unit, in collaboration with the Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID) and the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), has this afternoon arraigned Owani Kenneth Allan before the Anti-Corruption Court on charges of corruption and conspiracy to defraud.
Owani together with friends are accused of soliciting a bribe from Eryao Francis, a land buyer
Owani is the third suspect to be charged in a high-profile bribery case involving a UGX 70 million bribe tied to a land transaction in Lira District. He joins Chankoma Paul, the former Chairperson of the Lira District Land Board, and Ojuka Anthony, a district councillor, who were earlier charged in connection with the same case.
The trio is accused of soliciting a bribe from Eryao Francis, a land buyer, after claiming that the title to his purchased land had been fraudulently issued to the previous owners and was at risk of cancellation. The accused allegedly promised to influence the land board's decision to preserve Eryao's title in exchange for a bribe.
According to prosecution, the suspects demanded UGX 70 million, and had already received UGX 5 million as a part payment at the time of their arrest.
Owani Kenneth Allan has been remanded to prison until June 2, 2025, as investigations continue.
The case underscores the government’s intensified crackdown on corruption and abuse of public office, especially in the management of public land.
