Bushenyi – A week after schools reopened for the second term, local leaders in Bushenyi-Ishaka Municipality are expressing concern over the low number of learners reporting back to class.
Schools across the country officially resumed for the second term on Monday, May 25, 2025, but some schools in Bushenyi-Ishaka are still struggling to recover their full enrollment from the first term.

Speaking to journalists yesterday, Bushenyi-Ishaka Deputy Mayor Milton Betugura said some schools are operating below capacity.  "Some learners are still at home, and this is affecting planning and learning," Betugura said. "We urge parents to prioritize early reporting so that schools can run smoothly from the start of the term."

At Irembezi Primary School, headteacher Vianney Bakunda revealed that the school closed last term with 657 pupils, but only 594 had reported back by the end of the first week.
"We are concerned that some parents keep children at home to help with domestic work," Bakunda said. "This delays learning and disrupts the academic calendar."

Not all schools are struggling, however. At St. Kaggwa Boarding Primary School, headteacher Celestine Twinomugisha reported that over 95% of the pupils had already returned.
"We are pleased with the turnout so far. Most learners reported back on time, and learning is progressing well," he said.
