RUBIRIZI
Ven. Canon Joab Akankunda, the Archdeacon of Rugando Archdeaconry in West Ankole Diocese, has issued a stern warning to Christians against the growing habits of witchcraft, hatred, and jealousy, urging them instead to focus on spiritual renewal and hard work.
Speaking today during a thanksgiving service to welcome Yona Tumuranze, the new Lay Reader at Nyakatunga Church of Uganda in Katerera, Rev. Akankunda expressed concern over residents who waste valuable time and resources consulting false prophets and traditional healers. He challenged the congregation to abandon "unproductive practices" such as gossip and rumor-mongering, which he said stifle personal and community development.
“I urge you to repent and stop wasting time on witchcraft, malice, and hatred. Turn to God, live holy lives, and work hard to develop your families by fighting poverty, hunger, and domestic conflicts,” Rev. Akankunda said. He emphasized that mindset change is the first step toward socio-economic transformation, calling on the faithful to embrace love, cooperation, and strong moral values.
A Plea for Education and Child Welfare
The Archdeacon also took a firm stance against the practice of child marriage in Rubirizi District. He condemned parents who withdraw their children—particularly girls—from school to enter early marriages, noting that this cycle only increases illiteracy and ignorance within the community.
“Sacrifice and struggle to keep your children in school. Teach them the faith so that they become responsible citizens who can develop their families,” he appealed. He reminded the congregation that the church remains a refuge for those seeking forgiveness and a path away from societal vices.
New Leadership for Nyakatunga
The newly appointed Lay Reader, Yona Tumuranze, expressed his gratitude to the people of Rubirizi for their warm reception and support. Tumuranze, who was recently transferred by the Rt. Rev. Johnson Twinomujuni, Bishop of West Ankole Diocese, comes to Nyakatunga with 13 years of experience in the ministry, having previously served at Mugogo and Nyamirima Church of Uganda.
In his maiden speech, Tumuranze pledged to prioritize unity, health, and education during his tenure. He committed to mobilizing "backsliders" to return to the faith while simultaneously promoting practical initiatives to end hunger and poverty at the household level.
“I promise a gospel of cooperation and hard work. We will put more effort into fighting corruption within the church and ending domestic conflicts to ensure our homes are peaceful and productive,” Tumuranze stated.
