The South African government is closely monitoring a new respiratory virus outbreak in China that has sparked growing public concern due to its resemblance to Covid-19. Reports and viral videos online depict patients wearing surgical masks, with some appearing visibly ill, alongside claims of overwhelmed hospitals treating cases of flu and human metapneumovirus (HMPV). However, official confirmation of the outbreak's details is still awaited from Chinese authorities and the World Health Organization (WHO).
“We’re closely monitoring the situation in China using our event-based surveillance and continually seeking updates,” Department of Health spokesperson Foster Mohale told TimesLIVE. “It is the normal respiratory season in China, but with a later start than expected.”
The outbreak coincides with the fifth anniversary of the Covid-19 pandemic, which originated in Wuhan, China, causing global health and economic disruptions.
HMPV symptoms include cough, shortness of breath, congestion, and fever. Although the virus has been known since 2001, it has seen a recent surge in cases in China. Vulnerable groups, including children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems, are particularly at risk of severe complications.
Currently, no vaccine exists for HMPV. Preventative measures include frequent handwashing and mask-wearing.
Mohale reassured the public: “We will continue our routine surveillance and public health communications, acting on any new information or alerts. There is no need for panic. The Department of Health, in collaboration with the National Institute for Communicable Diseases, will keep the public informed about any developments.”
