Police have arrested Nelson Nuwataho in Ibanda District as investigations continue into a series of night attacks in Kitenga Sub-county, Mubende District, that left two people dead and several others injured.

Nuwataho was arrested on Monday, October 12, by Crime Intelligence officers from the Rwizi Police Region following information gathered from communities affected by the attacks.

He was subsequently handed over to a team from the Wamala Police Region and transferred to Mubende Police Station for interrogation.

The attacks occurred in the early hours of October 9, when assailants reportedly raided homes in three villages in Kitenga Sub-county, committing killings, attempted murders and aggravated robberies.

Ivan Sserwanja, 29, and his pregnant wife, Rose Nakalanzi, 26, were among those killed. The couple, who dealt in coffee, were found dead in their home in Lukaya Village.

Several other residents were reportedly seriously injured, including Onesmus Tumwebaze and Agatha Kukundakwe from Kayanja Village in Nsengwe Parish, as well as Deus Niwamanya and his wife, Kihembo, from Lwengabi Village.

The attackers also reportedly stole a motorcycle bearing registration number UFZ 589C and mobile phones from some of the homes they raided.

Police have not yet publicly disclosed the specific evidence linking Nuwataho to the attacks. Investigators are working to establish the circumstances surrounding the incidents and determine whether other suspects were involved.

In a move to strengthen security in the area, authorities deployed an additional 50 Field Force Unit officers from the unit’s headquarters in Naguru to reinforce police and Uganda People’s Defence Forces personnel already operating in Kitenga.

The deployment is intended to protect residents and prevent further attacks as investigations continue.

Nuwataho remains a suspect, and his arrest does not amount to a conviction.
