MARACHA
A family of six was killed in the early hours of Saturday after lightning struck their home during a heavy rainstorm in Nyanza Cell, Oleba Town Council, Maracha District.
The victims, a father, his wife, and their four children, died at around 5:00 a.m. when the lightning hit their house.
According to the LCIII Chairperson of Oleba Town Council, Robert Angupi, the lightning strike also ignited a fire that destroyed the family's home, leaving no survivors.
"The lightning struck the family's house during a heavy downpour and sparked a fire that destroyed the home. Sadly, all six family members died," Angupi said.
By Saturday morning, the bodies of the deceased were still at the scene as police and local authorities conducted investigations and completed the necessary procedures before they could be taken for post-mortem examinations and burial preparations.
Authorities had not yet officially released the identities of the victims by the time of publication.
The tragedy has left residents of Nyanza Cell in shock, with local leaders describing it as one of the worst lightning-related disasters the area has experienced in recent years.
Community members gathered at the scene to mourn the deceased and offer support to one another.
Lightning strikes continue to pose a serious threat in several parts of Uganda during the rainy seasons, particularly in rural communities where many homes lack lightning protection systems.
Police and district authorities are expected to release further details regarding the incident and any assistance that may be provided to the affected community.
