The Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) has withdrawn its endorsement of Rt. Hon. Anita Annet Among for Speaker of Parliament and Rt. Hon. Thomas Tayebwa for Deputy Speaker of the 12th Parliament, in a move likely to reshape political alignments ahead of the election of parliamentary leaders.
In a statement issued on May 12, 2026, PLU General Secretary David Kabanda said the decision followed fresh guidance from the movement’s chairman, Muhoozi Kainerugaba, who also serves as the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) of the Uganda People's Defence Forces.
Kabanda said an earlier endorsement issued on March 11, 2026, backing Among and Tayebwa had been “retracted and withdrawn with immediate effect.”
“Accordingly, the Chairman of the Patriotic League of Uganda, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has guided as follows: that the endorsement of Rt. Hon. Anita Annet Among and Rt. Hon. Thomas Tayebwa as candidates for Speaker and Deputy Speaker respectively for the 12th Parliament of Uganda, vide a letter dated March 11, 2026, is retracted and withdrawn with immediate effect,” Kabanda stated.
The statement further directed all PLU-leaning Members of Parliament-elect to support candidates who will be presented by Yoweri Museveni for the positions of Speaker and Deputy Speaker.
Kabanda said the PLU leadership remained committed to following the guidance of its chairman.
“In the PLU, we follow the command, instructions, and guidance of our Chairman, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, at all times,” he added.
Gen. Kainerugaba, who heads the PLU movement, has in recent days publicly criticized the management of Parliament over alleged corruption and misuse of public resources. The remarks have sparked debate within political circles over accountability and leadership in Parliament.
Political analysts say the withdrawal of support for Among and Tayebwa could influence voting patterns among legislators allied to PLU and intensify lobbying ahead of the election of leaders for the 12th Parliament.
