The Minister of ICT and National Guidance, Hon. Dr. Chris Baryomunsi, has today launched this year’s Tarehe Sita celebrations and related activities in Kanungu District. The launch began with a tree-planting exercise at the new Kihiihi Town Council offices. The Minister was accompanied by Deputy RDC Gad Ahimbisibwe Rugaju, Assistant RDC Zepher Mugisha, District Planner Atuheire Innocent, and UPDF Maj. Gen. Edward Tweheyo, among other dignitaries.
Minister Baryomunsi said President Yoweri Museveni is aware of the request to elevate Kihiihi Town Council to a municipality, and assured residents that the district leadership will continue following up on the matter.
He also revealed that the government has secured funds for the construction of the Hamurwa–Kanungu and Kihiihi–Katunguru roads.
These two roads are key pillars in boosting tourism development in the Kigezi Sub-region, as they will improve access to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Queen Elizabeth National Park—whose southern circuit lies in Kanungu District.
The launch of the Tarehe Sita activities was simultaneously held in Kabale, Rukiga, Rubanda, and Rukungiri Districts under the theme:
“Defending the gains of the revolution and honouring the sacrifice of the freedom fighters: A call to national unity, peace, and socio-economic transformation.”
